Why the 2019 iMac Is the Best Affordable Editing Rig (And How to Upgrade Its RAM)

If you’re looking for a powerful, affordable, and upgradeable desktop for video editing, the 272019 iMac stands out as one of the best options in 2025 in my opinion. Even with the latest iMac offerings, I’ve found that when I compare the prices for anything above a base model — once you start adding on storage that the price quickly jumps dramatically, plus you lose some screen real estate, the SD card slot, regular USB ports just to name a few. Bottom line is it was the best choice for me at this point in my life, because I was able to grab a mint condition unit off eBay for a little over $950. Compared to the decked out iMac I would need at nearly $3,000 the choice was obvious.

For Anyone That Needs iMac 2019 19,1 Ram…

If you want RAM that works, I have some lightly used RAM for sale here.

Why Upgrade the RAM Yourself?

Apple charges a premium for RAM upgrades. For example, upgrading to 32 GB through Apple can cost hundreds more than purchasing third-party memory. Instead, you can buy RAM from trusted brands like Crucial or OWC and install it yourself.

Key Specifications for RAM

Before purchasing RAM, make sure it meets these specifications:

  • Type: DDR4 SO-DIMM
  • Speed: 2666 MHz
  • Form Factor: Small Outline DIMM (SO-DIMM)
  • Capacity: Up to 128 GB (4 x 32 GB modules)
  • Voltage: 1.2V

Recommended RAM Brands

  1. Crucial
    • Highly reliable and affordable.
    • Example: Crucial 32 GB Kit (4 x 8 GB) DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM.
  2. OWC (Other World Computing)
    • Known for Apple-specific upgrades.
    • Example: OWC 64 GB or 128 GB kits for iMac.
  3. Corsair Vengeance
    • High-performance RAM compatible with iMacs.

How to Upgrade Your 2019 iMac’s RAM

One of the best features of the 2019 iMac is its user-accessible memory compartment, making DIY upgrades simple and cost-effective.

Step-by-Step RAM Installation

Turn Off and Unplug Your iMac

  • Shut down your iMac and disconnect all cables.

Access the RAM Slot

  • Press the button above the power socket to open the RAM compartment.

Install the New RAM

  • Pull off the cover, it isn’t attached to anything so just work it off and it’ll pop out.
  • There are tabs on each side of the ram slots, push each side outward towards the side of the computer. You can see me pushing the tab to the edge in the photo below.
  • The ram slots will lower so you can pull the RAM out.

  • Insert the RAM modules into the slots, following the diagram inside the compartment.
  • For optimal performance, install RAM in matched pairs (e.g., 2 x 16 GB or 4 x 8 GB).

Reassemble and Test

  • Replace the panel, reconnect the cables, and power on the iMac. Check if the system recognizes the new RAM under About This Mac > Memory.

Why This Upgrade Matters

By upgrading the RAM to 128 GB, my iMac can handle the most demanding editing tasks, including stabilizing 4K drone footage, exporting large batches of videos, and managing multiple tasks without lag.

Combined with the powerful Core i9 CPU and 5K display, this 2019 iMac offers incredible value compared to newer models that cost twice as much but lack upgradeability.

Why the 2019 iMac Is Perfect for Video Editing

As a video editor who often handles 4K footage, batch exports, and multitasking with dozens of Chrome tabs open, I needed a reliable and efficient machine. After upgrading from a 2015 iMac, I chose the 2019 iMac with the following specs:

  • Processor: Intel Core i9-9900K (8 cores, 3.6 GHz, boost up to 5 GHz).
  • Graphics Card: Radeon Pro 575X.
  • RAM: Upgraded to 128 GB.
  • Storage: 1 TB SSD.
  • Display: 275K Retina screen.

Why Not a New iMac or Mac Studio?

Apple’s newer products are enticing but come with limitations:

  1. iMac M3 (2024):
    • Smaller 24screen (compared to the 275K display).
    • RAM capped at 24 GB, with no upgrade options.
    • Limited to one external monitor.
    • Costs start at $2,400+.
  2. Mac Studio or Mac Mini:
    • Requires purchasing a high-quality monitor separately, which adds $1,000 or more to the cost.
    • Total setup cost can easily exceed $3,500.

In contrast, my 2019 iMac cost $1,050 (including taxes and shipping) and delivers similar performance to the latest M1 or M3 iMacs.

Performance Breakdown

Cinebench Results

To test my iMac’s capabilities, I ran Cinebench, a benchmarking tool for evaluating CPU performance. Here’s how it stacks up:

  • Single-Core Score: 1270 (similar to M1 MacBook Air).
  • Multi-Core Score: 10,284 (comparable to the 24iMac M3).

For less than half the price of a new machine, I’m getting comparable performance while retaining the ability to upgrade and customize the hardware.

How I Use the 2019 iMac for Editing

My workflow includes:

  • Batch Video Exports: Exporting 10–15 Instagram reels or a 20-minute 4K video is now seamless.
  • RealSteady Stabilization: Processing drone footage with GoPro’s RealSteady software is CPU-intensive but manageable on this machine.
  • Multitasking: With 128 GB of RAM, I can edit videos, stabilize footage, and perform SEO research with multiple Chrome tabs open simultaneously.
  • Multi-Monitor Setup: I run two external monitors, making it easier to manage timelines, previews, and research windows.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a video editor, photographer, or someone who needs a powerful workstation, the 2019 iMac is a standout choice. Its combination of performance, upgradeability, and affordability makes it one of the best investments for creative professionals.
